I was traveling yesterday and, while waiting in an airport security line, used my Blackberry to see what was shaking on Google News. The headlines speak for themselves:
US Dismisses Guantanamo Torture Report
US Plays Down Italy's Decision to Withdraw Troops from Iraq
Split Emerges in West's Front Against Iran
Meanwhile, back at the ranch:
Senate Votes to Preserve English
Senate Okays Higher Fines for Indecency
All this and surprising levels of apathy about the $70B tax break Bush signed and the recently revealed NSA domestic spying mess. Sigh.
Sometimes it gets incredibly discouraging and makes you wonder if there is a brain in Washington. But it also makes you wonder if this is a dying grasp for power from a party that has courted the extreme members of its constituency and knows that their time is up.
Of course it could also be unbridled arrogance....

I read this sentence out loud to a group of engineers from my team at lunch the other day and they cracked up like I did.
It touched off such a wave of nostalgia for the first machines we all used and when we first discovered the Internet. We all felt so old and yet so lucky.
